Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that Captain Underpants Epic Choice-o-Rama is an interactive short movie that prompts viewers to dictate the characters' choices by clicking on one of two icons at various points in the story. This encourages re-watching the movie (perhaps several times over) to see all the many ways the story can play out as different options are chosen. Kids familiar with Captain Underpants' particular brand of potty humor will find more of it here in toilet encounters and poop and butt references. Language is mild, but there are instances in which characters use "hate" and "stupid," and some cartoon-style violence is to be expected. Even so, fans of the Captain Underpants adventures will have fun taking an active role in this somewhat chaotic special and seeing how the story unfolds.

Violence & Scariness
a little
Infrequent cartoon-style violence, like when a man is thrown around the room or two characters engage in a martial arts fight. Some mild peril.

Positive Messages
a little
Harold and George are best friends who enjoy spending time together and share interest in making comics. Unfortunately, their comics (and sense of mischief) causes all sorts of problems for school principal, who gives them a hard time in return. Story involves bathroom humor like pooping, farting, and references to butts, but blend of stop-motion and 2D animation is visually intriguing, and choose-your-own-adventure format is engaging.
-
Positive Role Models
a little
Melvin's extremely nerdy character and the grumpy school principal who wants to squash Harold and George's fun are pretty stereotypical. The two best friends are creative, very loyal to each other, but Captain Underpants exists to do their bidding.
-
Educational Value
none
The show intends to entertain rather than educate.

What's the Story?
In the interactive TV special CAPTAIN UNDERPANTS EPIC CHOICE-O-RAMA, Mr. Krupp (voiced by Nat Faxon) plots to tear down George (Ramone Hamilton) and Harold's (Jay Gragnani) beloved treehouse -- the source of their creativity -- to stop them from making comics. As the boys devise their rebuttal, viewers can decide what the characters' next moves are at key points in the story by selecting the icons on the screen. When push comes to shove, though, will Captain Underpants (Faxon again) be able to help them save their favorite hangout from Mr. Krupp's schemes?
Is It Any Good?
Our review:

For Captain Underpants fans, the only thing better than watching a new installment in the storyline is being able to take part in it themselves. Epic Choice-o-Rama begins by showing viewers how to select one option over the other when they are tapped to make a decision in the story. It also explains that if they don't do so, a default choice will happen automatically. A timer bar at the bottom of the screen counts down the window of time for a selection. All things considered, there's very little interruption to the flow of the story because this feature relies on viewer input.
Parents know that the Captain Underpants style of entertainment is an acquired taste, and this pick is no exception. It's chaotic at times, it's filled with bathroom-themed humor, it presents adults as fairly hapless, and as its title suggests, its titular hero parades around in his skivvies. That said, it's a big draw for kids for obvious reason. And on the bright side, it centers on best friends who share a passion for being creative through their comics. And in the case of Epic Choice-o-Rama, it asks kids to pitch in on the creativity, inviting them to consider how different elements work together to make a story interesting.

Families can talk about what the interactive feature brings to Captain Underpants Epic Choice-o-Rama. Do you feel more invested in the story because you get to choose its direction? Are you tempted to watch it several times to explore all of the different options?
How does the Captain Underpants character embody traits that are important to Harold and George? How is teamwork a part of their success?
Is Mr. Krupp a villain in this story, or are his actions understandable, given Harold and George's mischief? Why do some cartoons cast adults as dimwitted, oblivious, or antagonistic? Does that send the wrong message to viewers, or is it all in fun?
